Receive interference can come from either your DC power leads or it is being picked up by your antenna. A quick way to determine where it is coming from is to simply unplug the antenna. If the noise goes away, the antenna is picking up the interference. If not, it is coming through the power leads.
DC Power Lead interference: Unplug DC power to other devices one at a time until the offending device is found. You should then consult the manufacture to determine the appropriate corrective steps.
If you are unable to conclusively determine which device is causing the interference, the following steps may help:
- Relocate or isolate your radios DC power leads from other wires.
- Install a line filter in each lead, (+) and (-); they should be close to the radio.
Route your power leads through a grounded conduit.
Interference via the Antenna: Unplug DC power to other devices one at a time until the offending device is found. You should then consult the manufacture to determine the appropriate corrective steps.
If you are unable to conclusively determine which device is causing the interference, the following steps may help:
- Relocate your antenna.
- Reroute your coax lead and keep as short as possible.
- Be sure your antenna is solidly mounted and that there are no loose parts.
Be sure your antenna system is corrosion free. You can also temporarily reduce the affects of this interference by increasing your radios squelch setting and by switching to Local for radios so equipped.
